Points of Interest

There are many things to do and places to visit while you are in the town of Puerto Ayora. Aside from taking the daily tours, when you have a bit of down time there are always places on the island of Santa Cruz to enjoy and explore.

Here are some of our favorites…

Lava Tunnels

From town we can help organize a taxi to the famous “Tunnels of Love” which is approximately around twenty minutes taxi ride from the hotel. Here you can climb and hike through volcanic tunnels that were formed many years ago. This is an enjoyable tour, and also a nice cool way to escape the hot weather. We highly recommend this interesting place to visit!

Charles Darwin Station

The Charles Darwin Research Station is approximately a 20 minute walk from the Hotel Silberstein. Here you can find giant tortoises, different species of Iguanas, and vegetation made of cactus’ and endemic Galapagos trees and bushes. We can help you with organizing a guide to assist you that can explain the history and current status of the station. Another highly recommended interesting place to visit!

Tortuga Bay

Tortuga Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Galapagos. It is a MUST visit during your stay in Puerto Ayora. We suggest taking a taxi ($1 ride) to the park entrance, and then it will take you approximately 30 minutes to walk to the beach (2.5 kilometers, 2 miles). It is well worth the walk and here you can see marine iguanas, and also sometimes sea turtles and white tip sharks swimming in the ocean. A definitely interesting point of interest to visit!

Garrapatero Beach

Garrapatero is another beautiful beach that should be visited. This beach is a bit further away from town, but less crowded with tourists, and most enjoyable for guests who don’t want to walk as far to get to the ocean, as Tortuga Bay. A cab ride from the Hotel will cost approximately $25 round trip, but well worth the ride! Yet another interesting and beautiful point of interest to visit!

Turtle Habitats

There are a few farms which are also natural turtle habitats in the highlands that guests can visit. Here you can observe the Galapagos giant tortoises in their natural environment! A cab ride from the hotel but only 20 minutes away… Our guests love visiting the turtles, which makes this yet another point of interest to visit!

Las Grietas

Las Grietas is a natural swimming area with cool crisp water to swim and snorkel in. The hike is over volcanic rock, so make sure to wear shoes on this trek. Your journey begins from the Finch Bay beach area, and after 20 minutes of hiking around cactus and rocks you will arrive to the water. We recommend going very early in the day as for it can get very very crowded with locals and tourists. Another awesome point of interest to visit!
